The Points Guy: This Is The Best No-Fee Credit Card

**The Points Guy: This Is The Best No-Fee Credit Card**

Brian Kelly, founder and CEO of The Points Guy, recommends the Chase Freedom Unlimited if you’re looking for a credit card with no annual fee. With this card, he says, you can maximize rewards and minimize costs.

» Subscribe to CNBC Make It.:

Kelly, who has 25 credit cards himself, typically steers clear of no-fee cards. They “generally offer less perks,” he tells CNBC Make It. Compared to cards with a fee, they “may not be the most lucrative in the long-term.”

But “if you’re dead set on a no annual fee card, I would recommend the Chase Freedom Unlimited,” he says.

The Freedom Unlimited offers 1.5% cash back on all purchases, which is “a decent earn,” says Kelly. It also offers 120-day purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

What Kelly particularly likes about the card, though, is that you can also earn your rewards on this card in the form of points. That will come in handy if you ever upgrade to a premium Chase rewards card that has an annual fee, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve, because you’ll be able to pair them.

“Here’s the deal,” explains Kelly: “If you get a card like a Chase Freedom Unlimited, those points are technically cash back, but, if down the line you get a Sapphire card, you’ll be able to transfer those cash-back points into your Sapphire points … and you can get a ton of value.”

If you end up combining your points across your Chase cards, you’ll have great redemption options, says Kelly: First, you can use them to book travel through the Chase travel portal. With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, every point you redeem on travel is worth 1.5 cents. That means its 50,000-point sign-up bonus can have a value of $750.

With the Sapphire Preferred, points redeemed on travel are worth 1.25 cents.

“In either case, you’re already getting more value per point than the 1 cent each you’d get by redeeming them for cash back,” TPG explains. Chase also offers 13 transfer partners, so you can trade your points in for United MileagePlus miles, for example, and find a seat in business class.

In general, if you’re new to points and miles, Kelly says, “starting off with a no-annual-fee card from one of the big banks, like Chase, is a good way to at least get your foot in the door.”

You can build up valuable travel points with the no-annual-fee card, and then, he says, if you switch cards, you’re going to be able to “upgrade those points to get as much value out of them as possible down the line.”

Whatever credit card you settle on, make sure you pay off your balance in full every month. Otherwise, the interest you end up owing by carrying a balance could negate the value of any points, benefits or cash back you earn.

The best no-fee credit card, according to The Points Guy | CNBC Make It.
So for starters, if you're
dead set on a no annual fee card, I
would recommend the Chase Freedom Unlimited. It offers 1.5 points on everything you
spend, so you don't have to worry about
all these categories and that's a decent earn. But here's the trick:
when you see the light down the road of
getting a card with an annual fee, if
you have Chase Freedom Unlimited points and then later
on you get a Sapphire, you'll be able
to transfer those cash back points into
your Sapphire points, which can then transfer
out to airlines and you can get a
ton of value. It's good to build
a relationship with the big banks and then
later on have those points that you can then
upgrade to the more valuable points program
within that same bank. When it comes to no
fee cards, I know they're easy to get, but there's
a saying, "Cheap is expensive." And what I mean
by that is the no annual fee cards
generally offer less perks and less
valuable earning. So sometimes you have to
look at your spend and how much you're going
to spend in a year and look at the annual
fee and see if you're gonna get value
from those perks. And there's no easy way
to do it, but look at the card and
there's a lot of unadvertised perks that can
save you tons of money. So whether that's
saving money on checked bags, free in-flight
Wi-Fi and also purchase protection, use a
card that offers purchase protection. I bought a expensive winter
coat and lost it in Iceland. Long story, it was
an accident, but AMEX, because I used an
AMEX platinum card, immediately took the
two thousand dollars right off of
my statement. Sometimes it may make sense
to use cards for big purchases that
offer purchase protection over earning a couple
extra points per dollar. So it takes a
little bit of time to look at what your goals
are and what you're going to spend money on
and make sure you're aligning it to cards that
offer you the most value back. I'm not saying that cards
with no annual fee are bad. I'm just saying they may
not be the most lucrative in the
long term.

bye guys some of you that watch my hair transplant series of videos know that I'm always talking about Amazon how I get free money to spend on Amazon and some of you have been asking if I'll go into a bit more detail on things like that and saving money in general these days none of us are rich well most of us on anyway so we go to try and save money where we can okay so the first thing I talk about is this website called money-saving expert com run by Martin Lewis who's on TV quite a lot these days but yeah it's a great website for saving money yeah there's lots lots of ways you can save a bit of money things like when you're flying you know I join the frequent flyer clubs even if you don't fly that often is still worth joining them you might not ever save enough points to get a free fly but you know they sometimes do things like if a flights overbooked and they're offering to pick you up you know hotel if you fly the next day and then they might upgrade you to business class they're far more likely to give that's someone who's in their frequent flyer club than someone that's not also things like moving seats around they're far more likely if you've got a few points on a card on an account rather than someone who's just not got any points at all another thing I use is Priority Pass if you fly more than a couple of times a year what you do is I signed up using Groupon you I think it was six pounds on Groupon they then give you like a voucher code to use on Priority Pass it allows you to stay in airport lounges before you fly so you get free food free alcohol comfier seized power to charge up your phone and you laptop and everything and it's quieter than normal passenger lounges so yeah like I said I bought a six pound voucher off of Groupon they then you then once you get the voucher code go to priority pass I think it was 68 pounds to sign up and I think my Groupon they actually gave me 30 percent off or 40 percent or something like that so then once you sign up used to be 15 pounds of time but now it's gone up to 20 pounds of time so every time you go to a lounge at one of these airports you just pay it's linked to your credit card so you don't even take cash you just show them the card sign for it and then you enter the lounge and yeah you get free alcohol free food non-alcoholic drinks as well like I said it's it's quite nice if you fly more than a few times a year to use that there are other places like lounge buddy which is a website where you can just book them but they came across quite a bit if you just turn up and you just play on the day you pay quite a lot more than that people say why do I always use Amazon they've got a great returns policy if you don't like something I get free cash to spend basically on Allison we're doing lots of things there's a few websites are used by the online questionnaires so there's one called valued opinions so it's valued opinions dot k dot uk' so you basically join this and then they will send you by email questionnaires which you answer when you get to a certain amount of cash you can then exchange it for a voucher and then they also there's it's also si which is another one opinion there's quite a few out there if you're interested in doing questionnaires you have to do them sort of fairly regularly to get the points to get the Amazon vouchers but it's well worth it because you soon build up credit in your Amazon account so that whenever you need to by saying you just use the cash that some of its top cashback this is website I really like using so when you by something say through Booker's if you're booking a holiday or if you're looking something like a hotel or if just a fly or anything basically there's eBay there's tons so what I'll do is I'll show you how to use it and what it does basically instead of going straight to eBay you go buy a top cashback there's also another site called Quinta Co which I don't use quite as much we used to talk cash back nice and so on so you going to top cashback you type in after you've logged in say eBay then takes you to eBay and when you've done your order on eBay you sign out and then top cashback will say it's tracked your purchase so basically you're getting cash back because they're referring you to eBay rather than going straight to eBay so I use this a hell of a lot there's tons of different online suppliers that you can go to via top cashback so it's top top cache Banco de que so you can see overall I've been pay six hundred and sixty pounds and six hundred and sixty two pounds total because I've got to pound twenty three outstanding so what you do is say you want to search for a store so you want to buy something on eBay swipe it up there after you've logged in and then we can see the eBay it's offering one point zero one percent cash back doesn't sound like a lot but if you buy stuff all the time on eBay it's certainly worth it builds up in the end the other thing I like about top cashback is when you get paid you can either just have normal cash if you get paid by something like Amazon they give you like an extra couple of percent on top so you get a little bit more money and they'll just send it as a voucher code so basically you choose the website you want and then you go to cash back and this will there tell you about eBay and then you go to get cash back now and all it does is it opens another website the eBay website or whatever site you've gone to you do your normal shopping on eBay then when you've finished you'll close it down and it says we've recorded your visits this case I've not bought anything so it won't sort of give you any cash back but normally if you bought something you'll show up in I think it's up to seven days you have to give it but normally it's quicker than that and then you can go sort of to your account and then you can see like payout you can go to so at the moment I've got nothing to pay out because there's nothing waiting for me but these are just some of the ways you can be paid like MasterCard virgin days Tesco Alford's you can see for example helfrich you'll get 6% bonus if you're paid in Halfords credit it's just tons of places I normally choose Amazon myself because I'd buy a lot of stuff on Amazon but you can have Primark Starbucks it's literally loads of places that you can get paid we can have backs or PayPal that's the one I normally use though Amazon and you get a 2% bonus they pay you in sort of gift card which is electronic it just comes free to your email address another good thing is you can send referrals so if one of your friends signs up once you've been a member I think you get a little bit of cash back once they've made their first purchase so that's a great way of making a little bit of extra on top the other thing with Amazon I like if you got like a YouTube site or something like that you can do become what's called now as an associate you have to apply for this and what is if you bought something that you like like I've sort of go through to review sometimes a lot of things I've bought you then can create a link which links to your sort of account for that item and then if people click on that link you get a little bit of money back don't get tons but you know it's better than nothing again you can be paid straight into your Amazon account if you do all these little things you might never have to spend any of your own money on the Amazon so I either that's another one for those who don't know of course uber is like a taxi service this is like an app on your phone so you pinch your phone link it to your credit or debit card and then you can choose for example you can choose to be picked up outside your house it picks out from the location on your phone or you can choose to be picked up from somewhere else if you click on it and on the apps pretty cool you can see like so they're like the little taxis that are going around at the moment and then you choose your ride where you want to go to let's just have a look and it will then tell you how for the taxi is from you and what time you should expect to arrive so and then you can choose the type of car which will be rubrics is a standard one props for people and a little bit of luggage you can have exec which be a slightly nicer car premium car excel is for people say there's six of you and you've got a bit more luggage so like a people carrier or Lux be ultimate luxury would be like a Mercedes s-class or a BMW 7-series or something like that yeah this works really well it used to be even cheaper because they used to do now they've got me down at the London area and I live about 25 miles from London so there's a minimum charge of five pounds now whereas it never used to be the thing I like about this is you can go to your accountant go to free rides it comes up with a code at the bottom there and you tell your friends or whoever not put a link at the bottom of this video then if your friends sign up using this code you'll get a little bit of money back onto your uber so you'll get a free right basically I think you get free pounds off your next trip so it's all worth doing you basically save a little bit of money by doing that when I have some friends over when we wanted to pop out for my birthday we basically I just sent them codes they sent each other codes it's that way we all sort of saved at them we basically got free rights that's before as a five pound minimum but yeah you can get sort of cheap rights by doing that but yeah it's all ways of saving a bit well it's a website called perfume parlour if you're into your aftershaves and perfumes these are like oils makers this one for example is called aqua the Geo and they're obviously copy sort of perfumes they smell it likes they're called I think and they smell like the originals so this is the website and what you do is you type in the the perfume or aftershave you're interested in and you do a search and they will bring up and they're not allowed to obviously call it the same thing but they put our money for Armani similar to that found in Armani Blanc code and whether it's in stock and you can choose the bottle size so one good thing about this site is I would start off by going for the free meal roll-on it's two pound 25 so if you do that you can try quite a few different ones then see if you like them if you do then you can go onto the bigger sizes the Rowland's are a bit weird the little bull f—ing in them is quite hard to roll on so I actually took that out of mine so what I do is I go onto a 30 mil spray if I like it it's eight pounds in the bottle I just showed you is a 30 mil spray some are better than others that's why I'd suggest trying the free meal ones first some of them I think actually smell better than the original ones and some of them are just really like the smells and because their oil was they last quite a long time on your skin so yeah that's another website that I'd recommend giving a go right and the last thing I'm going to talk about today is credit cards the major rule with credit cards is so you don't get yourself into trouble pay them off the full balance you know I would only use debit cards if it wasn't for the fact you can get things out of credit cards so I've got a Barclays card which gives you cash back it used to be one per sitting but I've cooked it down to half a percent now again doesn't sound like a lot if you're paying for things paying for holidays stuff like that half Upson gives you a bit of cash back so you set up a direct debit you pay off in full every month you use the card so it's done automatically then so you don't have to think about it but yeah you pay it off and then you get half of sin and the thing I like about the Barclaycard one is that you get paid you can just sort of Satan like the cash back now you don't have to wait in free year for it other credit cards that I use a couple for travelling purposes there's men called the Halifax clarity card which is great for traveling when you travel abroad some credit cards they charge you up to two point nine nine percent foreign transaction fees you don't want to do this because you're basically just throwing money away so the Halifax clarity one is very good for using abroad you don't get charged any transaction fees if you take money out for an eight an ATM you will get charged a bit of interest on that money until you get back so as soon as you get back pay off make an extra payment as well as your Directorate so you paid off the card straightaway so you get charged less interest something that's charged daily interview your direct debit comes out otherwise and there's another one I don't know if you have to be invited to if it's called MBNA this also gives you hops in cash bank and it's again got no foreign transaction fees so that's one I use the Broads mostly at the moment I think on that when you do have to wait a year to get the cash back but again is great for abroad because no foreign transaction fees I think one might be MasterCard and one might be Visa and the race sort of changed I think sometimes one supposed to be slightly better race than the other but when I've been checking them they're both pretty similar yeah the BOK because the credit card is great for just using in the UK that does have foreign transaction fees so I don't use it abroad I used Microsoft money on my PC then when I've spent something using the credit card what pill on Microsoft money so then you can see how much money you got in your account so I sort of simulated these come out straight away even that hasn't so you know how much you got left back in your current account until they take the director bit people a couple a day you know you get a bit of cash back the other thing is like with ebook errs for example if you go via top cashback you can get quite a good right back with them on tour cashback like I've shown you eBay that's one point I wonder Singh you get with ebook as I think it's quite a lot more obviously if you're booking a holiday and this for of year you just put you up on your Barclay cards you get your half percent back and you're getting the money back from top cash back on top the other thing I like about ebook is that's another one I'll quickly talk about is they've got their own kind of cashback scheme which is in addition to like going free top cash bank so you booked through ebook errs you get the cash back straightaway and you can use straight away on your next trip the other thing if you spend more than a few nights a year in a hotel they give you a free airport lounge pass once you go to their gold level so I use that when I actually went to get my hair transplant I went to an airport lounge at Heathrow that is an on priority pass using my free pass that I got from gold membership another tip I've got for you is I took out a Hilton credit card and they basically for spending 750 pounds on the card you got a free night in any of their hotels so I managed to stay in the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills I knew I was going to LA anyway and I had to book the flights for a few of us so what I did was put them on the credit card paid it off straightaway and then I got the free night in the hotel if you want to see that I've done natural video on that which I'll link to so check that one out the night I stayed in it was about 600 quid a night if I have to pay for it and that was completely free they have like a Rolls Royce that you can use it was just an amazing suite but yeah check the video out on that they also by having this credit card even if you don't use it after that which I haven't they put you up to silver membership if they're Hilton Honors Rewards sort of loyalty program so you get things like free water bottled water and stuff behind all of their hotels and other little freebies so that's another critical to consider but as usual pay off and fall don't let the interest build up if you've got any questions leave me a comment if you've got any tips leave me a comment if you find these useful subscribe or twenty some more at some point I'm sort of doing my hair transplant series that's one way I've saved money I've got my hair transplant in Turkey rather than the UK if you want to know more about that check out all the hair transplant videos on three months since the transplant it's all been going well so check those videos out if you want to know about hair transplants Cheers bye

fantastic they wanted to talk about companion vouchers so what is a companion voucher well a companion voucher is the most valuable benefit of any UK credit card what it does is give you one ticket absolutely free when you buy another ticket using a V us for example if I buy a return ticket using a biast for a lot from London to New York and back again I can get a second one from my companion free and I just pay the taxes so I can save on that whole heap of a V Oscar I would have had to spend on that second ticket let me explain this in more detail so how do you earn the companion voucher well there are two British Airways cards the British Airways American Express and the British Airways American Express Premium Plus this one is free this one has an annual fee of 195 pounds on the free one you need to spend twenty thousand pounds in 12 months to earn the Campania voucher and on the paid one you need to spend ten thousand pounds in 12 months to earn a companion pouch and now you've earned the vouchers I'm going to explain to you how to use them so first of all head to British Airways comm log in to your executive club account this is where your companion voucher lives click on book and then click book a flight with Avios once you've done that you'll see the option for BA American Express companion voucher click on that option and then type in your departure and destination point ok so once you put in the dates and the destination click search and it will bring up availability once you've found the flights that you want click on those flights it will show you the of Eos cost and the cost of the tax and click continue so that's booking a ticket in its most simple form but I also need to tell you about some of the rules the first rule is that you can only fly on ba aircraft next the flight has to start in the UK which is annoying if you're trying to avoid airport passenger duty next you have to pay for the flight using a V US only you can't use the address plus cash option next up you can fly on an open door ticket now let me explain what opens your means and opens your ticket is where you would fly from London to one destination let's say Hong Kong and then you return the fly comes back from somewhere else let's say Singapore so you're going to fly to London to Hong Kong make your own way to Singapore and fly from Singapore back to London all on that one British Airways ticket the important thing to remember about an open jaw is that the distance between your two airports in this case Singapore and Hong Kong is shorter than the distance between London and those two places that's what makes it an open door it's important to know about expiry of the vouchers the voucher you get on the premium card lusts for 24 months from issue and when you get from the free card lasts 12 months from issue so you can actually hold two at once if you earn one in each of those years you can actually use these vouchers together so you can buy two tickets using a biast and get two free ones so you end up with four tickets in total but you've only paid for two of them the last thing I want to explain is why never make sense to use the free cards to earn the voucher on the free card you pay no fee you get a five thousand a biast signup bonus the vouchers valid for 12 months and you earn one Avios per pack after you've spent 20 grand that means you're left with twenty five thousand abuse and a voucher that's valid for 12 months now let's look at the paid card you pay a hundred and ninety five pounds fee you get twenty five thousand of your signup bonus the voucher is valid for 24 months and you get one point five avi offs per pound spec so if you spend 20 grand on this card you end up with fifty five thousand obvious the difference thirty thousand of Eos is worth almost three hundred and fifty quid at t PG valuations so you can see how it makes sense to pay the hundred and ninety five pounds in order to get three hundred and forty-five quids worth of benefits and the voucher will last for 24 months instead of twelve so that's what companion voucher is that's how to earn it and that's how to spend it subscribe link below oh yeah subscribe to our youtube channel and check out the link below for an in detail guide on companion vouchers and also sign up to our newsletter on the points guy code at UK

‘Points Guy’ Explains How To Get The Most Value On Airline Tickets, Flyer Miles | Megyn Kelly TODAY
Kelly it's great to have you here today we have got one of the most famous mentalists in the country owes Perlman this guy is going to blow your mind and make you believe in psychic powers plus Elizabeth – Elizabeth High School she's gonna be here with some New Year's Eve cocktails for you maybe a hangover cure as well we'll see and low cash is gonna be performing live fire miles yeah and and have no idea how to cash them in no idea I feel like they make it intentionally hard you know with so many airlines travel websites blackout dates restrictions of up about using those points can be very confusing and here to help us get a little bit more bang for our travel bucks is Brian Kelly he's the CEO and founder of the website come on over first of all do you believe as I believe that is by design that is so hard to cash in those points it is hard to cash in the points but definitely not impossible I mean I I think this year I've saved $70,000 on flights just by redeeming for her Wow that's it anyone can do it too I mean I think the thing is people just give up you know people think oh I can never use my points but you can and they're so valuable all right number one you say that there's some website that can really help us what's that well I think so there's two different things I want to talk today one is saving on airfare right because even if you don't have points who hates paying too much money to the Airlines for airfare right so the biggest thing and searching for airfare so there's just a website it's free I'm obsessed it's called Google flights and what Google flights will let you do who here has ever been like I just need to get away I don't care where it like if it's freezing cold you're like I just need to get to a beach so Google flights has a map feature where you can say ok I'm leaving from Chicago and it'll show you all the cities where you can fly and the prices that you can go so you may see a city in Florida that you've never been to and my tip is go somewhere new go don't you know don't keep going to the same old spots that are really expensive even Puerto Rico it's back up for business it may not be exactly what it was but let's support Puerto Rico you [Applause] also say I know that we should we should try booking on on foreign websites is I would have websites for an airline so this is the crazy thing ok so here's this is like an insider tip and it may take a second to wrap your head around it but there are websites the u.s. dollar is really really strong right now so if you book in foreign currencies so here's an example say you want to go to London New York to London on Norwegian air so they fly to tons of places where we just like one of the top like expanding Airlines in the u.s. they've got really cheap fares so it's three hundred ninety dollars if you booked in US dollars if you click that your country is Norway and it will change the website into Norwegian you can save 20 percent by paying in Norwegian Crona and this is totally legal like this is totally legal people always like trust me done it so literally a $390 ticket drops instantly same exact flight to 322 do you navigate the language Oh Google Translate it's actually pretty simple it sounds crazy but it's like saving money it's like putting you know it's like saving 20 percent that is very good to know yeah all right what about the the dreaded non-refundable ticket okay that you know you're gonna lose money if you can't no but sometimes you have to cancel so here's the thing with airline tickets so the airlines are gonna charge you $250 to change your ticket it could be more than the actual price I've actually called the airline they're like you owe us money to cancel the ticket right I refuse but what I've done is so I booked flights all the time never if you know your tickets gonna get cancelled wait because if there's even so the airlines can change the schedule around they do that all the time even if they change the schedule by five minutes you can call and be like no that five-minute change doesn't work for me and they'll refund you so then if there's a but you're playing the odds and you know you have to cancel you're not gonna show your trip you're betting that they're gonna do so if you're gonna cancel and lose all the value you've already lost so watch that flight if there's a big Blizzard coming you can call and say hey there's this Blizzard coming do you mind canceling and you would be shocked and especially I mean my main tip today is be nice if you're a jerk I mean that's in life right but you would be I've called airline agents you know you charm them a little bit and you just say look I know today's been crazy for you but if you ask it never hurts to ask and the same thing in the airport like if your flights cancelled I know you want to just scream at that person and I see it all the time but the nice people win if you're actually nice to those people who work so hard they don't get paid a lot of money and trust me they don't want your flight to be canceled you know so change your mindset and you can get that last seat on the next one time my husband and I are checking into a hotel with our kids our young kids and they had given away our room even though we had paid already for the night in advance we'd already paid and we had so we have three little kids we don't know where we're gonna go what we're gonna do and I got a little rude with the woman who was rude with me she was not apologetic and eventually they found us some other room whatever so we went to a room it was good we got in I went back down I said I'm sorry I just dressed out my three kids and I didn't mean to be and then she was nice it was like I felt better and she felt better sometimes you know you you're better angels aren't there when you need them and then they come they come later it doesn't matter who you are hotels can still walk you from that's what we call it in the industry you're getting walked so if you're checking in late at a hotel always call and say hey I'm checking in late because that's the day goes on they think oh this person's not going to show up let's charge someone else let's talk about points yes points because that's what I don't know how to catch them and it's overwhelming to me yes so points you need to think of points as currency right so when you fly everyone here like put your frequent flyer count on your flight right so then a lot of people I'm not saying you're a points hoarder a lot of people have poison that's what we call people who have crew points and then never use yes but points are really valuable and the thing is there's a lot of myths around them people think they can't use them they won't even check but even when you check an airline websites you use your miles airline websites lie that may come as a shock but they're not showing you all of the award availability so airlines have partners so they have alliance partners and all these other partners but the systems don't talk to each other so if you're searching on a certain airline website to go to Hong Kong you know there may be an Asian carrier that has award availability but it doesn't show up on that Airlines website how do you figure that get up and call I know it's crazy to think about in this day and age calling an airline but being nice and calling an airline and specifically say can you please search on partners and here's the crazy search on partners so call up and say I would like you to search I'm trying to go to Hong Kong can you search on your partner and as nice as you are and the more information you can give them so if you do a little bit of research and you know who those partners are to begin with and here's the kicker when you book using miles on partners it's always at the lowest level possible so that's another reason why you think well why aren't the airline systems talking to each other because they don't really want you to know that it's the cheapest using arrows so I think what we've learned here today is you should probably have a glass of wine before you make a call you should put on some good TV to ride you through the three hours it's gonna take to get through it and maintain you happy yes thank you so much that's really helpful yes thank you I appreciate it hello today fans thanks
