what's up guys today I'm gonna give you the need-to-know rules when you're applying to city cards but if this is your first time here my name is Jason I'm the founder of Nomad travel hacker comm the travel rewards consultant and I teach the use of travel points and miles for free travel and experiences so be sure and subscribe so you don't miss anything ok guys where today we're talking city cards and what you need to know when applying to make sure you get approved so back in the day city used to be very Chernobyl very easy to apply to they've gotten a lot stricter over the last couple of years as have many of the card holders so it's important you understand the rules or you might get flat out tonight so let's jump into the rules and see how they look so first of all so this is the six six and high credit line both of these are not rules so to speak but they are things that you should definitely note and take into consideration as there's quite a few data points out there that suggest that six six means that if you have had six hard polls within the last six months then there's a good chance you're gonna get denied so while this isn't like a hard rule by City definitely something to consider and if you're well over that you got a bunch of hard polls recently maybe consider getting card summer olds another thing that people have noted is that if you have like a ridiculous amount of credit with them then there's a good chance they will deny you so if you have a really high credit line with the city then I don't know what that number is no one really has an exact number for it but if you feel it's too much and you're thinking of applying to a city card I would definitely consider trying to get rid of some of that credit otherwise you might automatically be denied so the 865 ninety-five rule what does that mean basically it means that you can only get approved for one personal card every eight days and no more than two in a sixty five day period now these are not just for approvals but these are actually just for applications so if you are if you apply to hard and you're denied this will still count but I'm just calling it basically the same thing as an approval but yeah if you applied to more than two personal cards every eight days more than two every 65 you will automatically be denied so you can only get one business card every 95 days so really the interesting part about this guy's is that the rules are actually eight sixty ninety but there's a lot of data points and people suggesting that city isn't as counted on their applications like there's there's a lot of people that have said this said that they were at the 61 or 62 or 63 day mark and they basically said that you know you had too many within 60 days and people try to fight it and lost so a lot of people have had a lot more success waiting an extra five to six days so I recommend waiting 66 96 days rather than just the the 60 90 that they have in place just because for some reason a bank can't seem to count I know it sounds strange but there's a lot of data points that suggest that so you might as well wait a few more days and increase your chances of getting approved okay so this looks familiar you cannot get a scientist ina bonus once every 24 months you know that's not too bad but really where City comes into play and gets a bit tricky is they're basically saying it's not just perk hard but you can only get a sign of bonus once every 24 months per product line now that they're officially completely done with Hilton and I'm saying that they only have American Airlines and thank you as true product lines right now they have a few other cards out there but to be honest they're and I'm not even gonna count them for for this discussion but basically you can only get approved for one American Airlines and one thank-you card that being said the personal and the business are considered separate so basically within a 24 month period you can get one personal and one business a a one personal and one business thank you car and the banking series is like their transferable point series similar to an American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards etc so these are definitely things that you need to understand because they will let you get these other cards but they will not let you get a signup bonus for so that's that really sucks it's a major bummer and getting those cards on the signup bonus really is kind of a waste of your time so these are all things that you should definitely take into account when you're applying for citi cards you know hopefully they've got some new good stuff coming out lately but they don't have a lot of exciting cards going on right now so hopefully that'll change soon but guys hopefully this video was helpful for you and you understand now what you need to do to get approved for citi cards give it a thumbs up if it was drop me a comment and let me know what's your favorite city card if you guys haven't already go ahead and subscribe so you don't miss any upcoming videos and as always use my links down below it will help keep beer in my fridge and I what's up TRC fan a super short video today but basically I just wanted to have a little gift for you so I was working with one of my students last week and we were talking about the airline alliances and you know that's something I'm noticed is a big topic of confusion for a lot of people just getting into the game so many people don't know that there are airline alliances and to be honest until I really got on this game I didn't either and I hear all the time you know well I never fly AAA why would I want any a miles or well I'll never fly United again after what happened last year and you know stuff like that all the time so people think that they just need to get something like a Chase Sapphire Preferred or an Amex platinum and get you know Amex points or chase points and then book within the system to fly internationally and that is not the way to do it so usually the best way to do it is through transfer partners or just booking through partner Airlines through you know a lot of the US airlines so most people don't realize that each of the three biggest airlines in the u.s. is attached to one of the three biggest airline alliances and it's getting easier and better than ever there's more and more airline partners available to booked inside of the online booking system AAA has really made a big improvement recently to where it used to be really hard to book any partners but they've really expanded that a lot United has always been great for that and you know Delta is actually not too bad for that either so basically long story short it just created this little document because my student was saying it's always annoying for him to have to go and find these things online and look at it and if you go to the like the oneworld alliance or the Star Alliance websites are actually like not it's a little hard to actually find where they show the Alliance is we know weird enough so basically I just had my team and I we put together this easy little PDF just with all the Alliance's and all of the partner Airlines just in one easy place and a simple PDF and a couple different formats so that's pretty much it so I just wanted to share it with you guys and give it to you for free so basically just click the link down below and you can go and download that I figured more people should enjoy it since I actually took there's quite a bit of time to put it all together and make it look nice and I do think it looks nice if I Tuesday sell myself but that is pretty much all for today guys so I hope this video I hope hope you guys enjoy it so give this video a thumbs up if you appreciate it drop me a comment and let me know if you guys like it if you haven't already go ahead and hit subscribe so you don't miss any upcoming videos and as always using any of the links down in the description help support the channel thanks for watching guys talk to you soon

what's up guys today I'm going to talk about the five rules that you need to know for American Express credit cards and credit card applications okay so American Express is a bit picky and their rules are a bit more strict than some of the other credit card holders so there's five rules that you need to know okay so rule number one is you can only get a credit card sign up offer once a lifetime so you may be able to get a card cancel it apply again and get approved but you cannot get that signup bonus that being said you get most of the value or at least a lot of the value on most cards from the sign up bonus so if you're not able to get a sign up bonus for a travel rewards card then it's almost certainly not worth getting that card so you got to be very careful while when applying the cards and make sure that you get an escalated sign up bonus American Express is always having specials and offering higher signup bonuses an offer to retain your customers so be sure that you do some research and find out what is a normal offer and wait until they do have a higher offer than normal that way you get the most value out of this as possible rule number two is that you can only get a proof or one card every five days so to go to proof of that second card you have to wait six days now rule number three is that you can only apply you can only have two cards in 90 days so basically to get that third card you have to wait past that 90 day period to get approved for a third American Express card the fourth rule is that you can only have five active American Express cards at a time to get approved for more cards if you already have five open you're basically going to need to close one of those cards down and be very careful with what cards you apply for to get that you know higher signup bonus as well as what cards you're currently keep open as you only have access to five of them now I will say that the American Express charge cards which are different than credit cards do have different rules and it seems that you can have as many of those as you like they do not have spending limits and basically you're just supposed to pay those charge cards off every month at the end of the month and if you don't you get a fee so they're a little bit different than credit cards but the rules on one card every five days to every 90 days do not apply but the once-in-a-lifetime rule does apply but the fifth rule is for American Express cards is it you want to keep your total spending limit under thirty thousand dollars is what I recommend so data points say that you can have it as high as thirty five thousand dollars and why you want to keep it under thirty to thirty five thousand dollars as once you have it over thirty to thirty five thousand dollars that they have been known to do a what is known as a financial review these are very dreaded and travel hacking nobody wants to deal with it and it's a really big pain in the ass basically what that is is they're gonna want to see proof of your income proof of where you live just ask for a whole bunch of documents and question you like they're the FBI and you're and being investigated for murder so in order to not have to deal with that nobody wants to deal with it trust me your spending limit under thirty to thirty five thousand dollars if it starts to start creeping up there all you have to do is call American Express and have that number reduced because most people do not need that much anyway so comment below and tell me what is your favorite American Express card also let me know if there are any other travel hacking tips or digital Nomad questions that you have for me and I will make a video to answer those for you this video was helpful please give it a thumbs up or share it with a friend really helps me out and thank you for your time again guys I will talk to you tomorrow thanks you

The Points Guy: This Is The Best No-Fee Credit Card

Brian Kelly, founder and CEO of The Points Guy, recommends the Chase Freedom Unlimited if you’re looking for a credit card with no annual fee. With this card, he says, you can maximize rewards and minimize costs.

» Subscribe to CNBC Make It.:

Kelly, who has 25 credit cards himself, typically steers clear of no-fee cards. They “generally offer less perks,” he tells CNBC Make It. Compared to cards with a fee, they “may not be the most lucrative in the long-term.”

But “if you’re dead set on a no annual fee card, I would recommend the Chase Freedom Unlimited,” he says.

The Freedom Unlimited offers 1.5% cash back on all purchases, which is “a decent earn,” says Kelly. It also offers 120-day purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

What Kelly particularly likes about the card, though, is that you can also earn your rewards on this card in the form of points. That will come in handy if you ever upgrade to a premium Chase rewards card that has an annual fee, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve, because you’ll be able to pair them.

“Here’s the deal,” explains Kelly: “If you get a card like a Chase Freedom Unlimited, those points are technically cash back, but, if down the line you get a Sapphire card, you’ll be able to transfer those cash-back points into your Sapphire points … and you can get a ton of value.”

If you end up combining your points across your Chase cards, you’ll have great redemption options, says Kelly: First, you can use them to book travel through the Chase travel portal. With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, every point you redeem on travel is worth 1.5 cents. That means its 50,000-point sign-up bonus can have a value of $750.

With the Sapphire Preferred, points redeemed on travel are worth 1.25 cents.

“In either case, you’re already getting more value per point than the 1 cent each you’d get by redeeming them for cash back,” TPG explains. Chase also offers 13 transfer partners, so you can trade your points in for United MileagePlus miles, for example, and find a seat in business class.

In general, if you’re new to points and miles, Kelly says, “starting off with a no-annual-fee card from one of the big banks, like Chase, is a good way to at least get your foot in the door.”

You can build up valuable travel points with the no-annual-fee card, and then, he says, if you switch cards, you’re going to be able to “upgrade those points to get as much value out of them as possible down the line.”

Whatever credit card you settle on, make sure you pay off your balance in full every month. Otherwise, the interest you end up owing by carrying a balance could negate the value of any points, benefits or cash back you earn.

The best no-fee credit card, according to The Points Guy | CNBC Make It.
So for starters, if you're
dead set on a no annual fee card, I
would recommend the Chase Freedom Unlimited. It offers 1.5 points on everything you
spend, so you don't have to worry about
all these categories and that's a decent earn. But here's the trick:
when you see the light down the road of
getting a card with an annual fee, if
you have Chase Freedom Unlimited points and then later
on you get a Sapphire, you'll be able
to transfer those cash back points into
your Sapphire points, which can then transfer
out to airlines and you can get a
ton of value. It's good to build
a relationship with the big banks and then
later on have those points that you can then
upgrade to the more valuable points program
within that same bank. When it comes to no
fee cards, I know they're easy to get, but there's
a saying, "Cheap is expensive." And what I mean
by that is the no annual fee cards
generally offer less perks and less
valuable earning. So sometimes you have to
look at your spend and how much you're going
to spend in a year and look at the annual
fee and see if you're gonna get value
from those perks. And there's no easy way
to do it, but look at the card and
there's a lot of unadvertised perks that can
save you tons of money. So whether that's
saving money on checked bags, free in-flight
Wi-Fi and also purchase protection, use a
card that offers purchase protection. I bought a expensive winter
coat and lost it in Iceland. Long story, it was
an accident, but AMEX, because I used an
AMEX platinum card, immediately took the
two thousand dollars right off of
my statement. Sometimes it may make sense
to use cards for big purchases that
offer purchase protection over earning a couple
extra points per dollar. So it takes a
little bit of time to look at what your goals
are and what you're going to spend money on
and make sure you're aligning it to cards that
offer you the most value back. I'm not saying that cards
with no annual fee are bad. I'm just saying they may
not be the most lucrative in the
long term.
