Wood makes our homes work. Because it is such a significant component of a home’s construction, it represents one of the larger costs. When used in exterior wall framing, wood is a source of thermal bridging, allowing outside temperatures in…impacting energy bills. Advanced framing is a creative approach to framing a home that reduces the quantity of wood used. This approach both saves money and improves the home’s thermal envelope.

short-shorts advanced framing and you might think that the wood part of the home the framing is the area where you can have the least amount of innovation but that's not necessarily true there are actually some advanced techniques that can be used to reduce the amount of wood that goes into a house and that's gonna save you money on construction costs at the same time it's gonna allow you to put more insulation into the wall cavity and that's gonna save you money on energy what are some of the advanced framing techniques that you've used at the house here at Cera mean the simplest advanced framing technique that you can use is your start spacing so by doing this you're increasing your area of insulation which in turn it's gonna make a better building envelope and perform better because you're reducing the amount of lumber on that exterior surface California corners another technique that we use here is California corners canvas is a cross section if we go like this then it allows you to spray foam insulation behind that corner the California corner eliminates a stud on the standard corner assembly to allow insulation deeper into the corner a two stud window this is a two stock window framing which basically what we're doing is getting this cripple stock all the way to here putting the window seal and then stacking it stacking your other one like this and then setting your header here and then you come with AK install the standard window framing assembly uses cripple jack and king studs the two stud window stacks a shorter Jack stud and the sill on the cripple stud eliminating material again you eliminate it one extra thought on this framing assembly recessed headers for a six inch wall assembly the typical header stacks three two by sixes the advanced framing method removes one two by six and pushes the header to the outside allowing for an inch and a half of foam insulation inside the header we were able to push the headers back to the outside and allow for an inch and a half of insulation to be placed on front of the header space again reducing thermal bridging interior tea walls this is another advanced framing technique that you implement on your interior walls that t2 exterior walls and basically what you're trying to achieve is to have insulation behind this member if we assume that this is the exterior of the house is typically to have you know a solid block of lumber like that okay and this is your sheathing that way you can nail and set your tea wall so then you suddenly have a massive block of lumber behind this in that your exterior so that's a weak spot a standard tea wall assembly uses three studs at the junction in this case two by sixes the advanced framing technique uses two two by fours with the wide side end this provides for a continuous nailing surface plus three and a half inches of foam insulation behind the junction imagine this is the bottom plate okay and then your sheathing is here so suddenly we gain in our case three and a half inches of insulation behind this member non-solid headers the other advanced framing technique is on your known load-bearing walls using non-solid headers to frame your door openings for non load-bearing walls the standard double 2×8 or engineered wood header is replaced with a single two-by-four for a significant material savings if this wall is not bearing any load you really don't need that two by eight to distribute the weight around the open and on this home we have many other advanced framing techniques the interior wall or our old space 24 on center as well it's all about paying attention to those little details and how to reduce lumber in maximize the use of insulation on your exterior walls

My dripping faucet was costing me $118 dollars a year! Time to fix it! A dripping faucet costs money every minute of the day…but how much? My dripping shower was being neglected (honesty is the best policy)…partly because I’ve wanted to measure it and make a video. This video illustrates what I found and details the math of how I figured out the dollar amount hitting my wallet. It was more than I thought! Yikes! I’m making time to fix this faucet.

how much money does the trip cost let's find out my shower has a pretty bad trip i catched the water and set a timer for 15 minutes measure the captured water and multiply by 4 for a whopping nine thousand three hundred and seven point five gallons per year at a cost of a hundred and eighteen dollars picture drips save big money twenty six second green you got time for this if you're curious about my calculations here's the math 4.25 cups for every fifteen minutes equals 17 cups per hour multiplied by 8760 hours in the year for a whopping total of a hundred and forty eight thousand nine hundred and twenty cups per year divide that by 16 cups per gallon for a total of nine thousand three hundred and seven and a half gallons my water rate is four dollars and 85 cents per thousand gallons but I'm billed for sewer as well based on my water consumption and that has a rate of seven dollars and 82 cents per thousand gallons for a combined rate of $12.67 per thousand gallons of water nine thousand three hundred and seven point five gallons divided by a thousand multiplied by $12.67 equals a hundred and seventeen dollars and ninety two cents ouch time to fix the drip our mission at Green Schwartz is to help you see green so you can be green and save a little green thanks for watching and please subscribe for more 26 second green
